Kopitiam in Life
Straits Times LIFE! – 7th, August 2013 AMONG OTHER STAND-OUT WORKS AT THE SAME SHOW ARE STUDENT EUGENE SOH’S THE LAST KOPITIAM, A PHOTOGRAPH SET IN MAXWELL HAWKER CENTRE AND IS INSPIRED BY RENAISSANCE PAINTER, SCIENTIST AND INVENTOR LEONARDO DA VINCI’S THE LAST SUPPER. THE CHARACTERS INCLUDE “WILLING” PEOPLE RANGING FROM MEN WHO WORK AT HAWKER CENTRES TO DINERS TO SOH’S FRIENDS. “WHAT I WAS AIMING FOR WAS A REIMAGINING OF DA VINCI’S FAMOUS CHARACTERS IN A LOCAL SINGAPOREAN CONTEXT,” SAYS THE 25-YEAR-OLD, WHO IS IN THE FINAL YEAR OF THE INTERACTIVE MEDIA PROGRAMME AT NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY. THE PICTURE, WHICH RECEIVED THOUSANDS OF LIKES ON FACEBOOK, WAS SPOTTED ONLINE BY MR WILLIE, WHO FELT IT WAS A FITTING ADDITION TO THE SHOW. “GIVEN THAT SO MUCH OF BEING SINGAPOREAN REVOLVES AROUND FOOD, I FELT EUGENE’S PHOTO IS A TONGUE-IN-CHEEK TAKE ON THE ISSUE.”
